Herter Brothers Inlaid Mirror

The firm of Herter Brothers (New York) was the standard of the industry when it came to furniture and design, working with clients of the elite class of the Gilded Age. They were privately commissioned to design and furnish the finest mansions in the country.

Among their most prominent clients were the Vanderbilts. Between 1879 and 1882, Herter Brothers decorated William H. Vanderbilt’s new Fifth Avenue mansion in New York City.

The Red Room of the White House was furnished with Herter Brothers furniture during the administration of Ulysses S. Grant. Several pieces of Herter Brothers furniture remain in the White House.
